Okay, so let me tell you about my experience at the Emporia, KS coaches soccer convention. It was a whirlwind of drills, discussions, and way too much coffee, but totally worth it.
It all started with booking the tickets. I saw the advertisement online and thought, “What the heck, I could use some fresh ideas.” So, I clicked, paid, and blocked off the weekend. Getting there was a small adventure in itself. A few hours driving, singing along to some classic rock – you know, the usual road trip stuff.
The convention itself was held in the local high school. First thing I did was grab my registration packet. That thing was packed with schedules, maps, and enough flyers to wallpaper my garage. After a quick scan, I headed straight for the field sessions. That’s where the real action was.

The first session I attended was on attacking strategies. Coach was intense. Lots of shouting, diagrams on whiteboards, and running through drills. We did some basic passing patterns, switching play drills, and then some small-sided games to apply the principles. My legs were burning by the end of it, but I picked up a couple of sweet new moves to try out.
Next up was a goalkeeper training session. I’m not a goalie coach by any stretch, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to learn a bit. The coach there was super knowledgeable. We covered everything from basic handling techniques to diving and positioning. I even got to put on the gloves and take a few shots – let me tell you, those keepers have some serious skills!
Lunch was your typical conference fare: sandwiches, chips, and fruit. But the best part was the chance to chat with other coaches. I met guys and gals from all over the state, some coaching high school, others working with youth leagues. It was great to swap stories, share frustrations, and just connect with people who understand the passion (and the headaches) of coaching.
The afternoon sessions were more focused on tactical analysis and game management. We watched some game film, broke down different formations, and discussed how to adjust your tactics based on the opponent. I scribbled down a ton of notes. Seriously, my notebook looks like a mad scientist’s journal right now.
- Formation breakdowns
- Set piece strategies
- Defensive pressing triggers
One of the highlights was a presentation on player development. The speaker talked about creating a positive and supportive training environment, focusing on individual growth, and building team cohesion. It wasn’t all about winning, but about helping players reach their full potential. That really resonated with me.

The convention wrapped up with a Q&A session with a college coach. Everyone peppered him with questions about recruiting, scholarships, and the path to playing at the next level. It was fascinating to hear his perspective and get some insights into the world of college soccer.
Overall, the Emporia, KS coaches soccer convention was a fantastic experience. I came away with a bunch of new ideas, some valuable connections, and a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the game. Plus, my calves are definitely feeling it – good reminder I need to hit the gym more often!
Now, time to start implementing some of these strategies with my own team. Wish me luck!
