Finding My Hoop Spot in Leuven
So, I found myself in Leuven not too long ago. Nice place, really. But after settling in a bit, you know how it is, you start missing your routines. For me, that’s basketball. Not looking for anything serious, just a place to shoot around, maybe get into a pick-up game. Sweat a little, forget the daily grind for an hour or two.
First thing I did was just walk around some parks I knew, hoping to stumble upon a court. Saw a few hoops here and there, some looked a bit rough, others were empty. I asked a few folks at a local cafe if they knew where people played casually. Got some vague directions, mostly pointing towards the university area or the big sports complex, Sportoase.
My Search Begins

So, I decided to check out the area around the university sports facilities first. Found some outdoor courts. Looked promising. One afternoon, after work, I just took my ball and went there. There were actually people playing! Mostly students, I guess. Looked like a decent level, nothing crazy, just people having fun.
- Took my basketball.
- Headed to the courts I spotted earlier.
- Saw a game happening.
Felt a bit awkward just standing there, you know? Like the new kid. But eventually, during a break, I just walked up and asked if they needed one more. Simple as that. They were pretty cool about it. One guy spoke decent English, made it easier. We figured out teams, and I just jumped in.
Getting into the Game
The game itself was fun. Pretty fast-paced, but nobody was taking it too seriously. Good mix of skills. I was rusty, definitely missed a few easy shots, but it felt great just to run and play again. Language wasn’t really a barrier on the court – a pass is a pass, a foul is a foul, you figure it out.
What I Noticed
- People were generally welcoming.
- The vibe was relaxed, mostly about having a good time.
- Basketball is a good way to connect, even without speaking the same language perfectly.
Played for about an hour until it started getting dark. Afterwards, chatted a bit with a couple of the guys. Found out they usually play around that time a few days a week if the weather’s good. Got the general schedule, which was great.

So yeah, that was my little adventure finding some basketball in Leuven. Didn’t require joining a club or anything formal. Just had to get out there, look around, and not be afraid to ask. If you’re in a similar boat, my advice is just to check out the public courts, especially near the university areas or main sports centers, bring your ball, and see what happens. Worked for me!
