Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “naked w” thing, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a ride. I’m no expert, just a guy who likes to tinker, so bear with me.
It all started with this idea I had. I wanted to see if I could, you know, strip down a Model W and get it running with the bare minimum. Like, REALLY bare minimum. Think of it as a digital detox for a computer.
The Strip-Down
First, I grabbed my old Model W, the one gathering dust in the corner. I unscrewed the case – always a bit nerve-wracking, hoping I don’t lose any tiny screws.

Then came the fun part – deciding what to ditch. I disconnected the Wi-Fi module. Bye-bye, internet! Removed the Bluetooth module. No more wireless headphones. I even considered taking out the audio jack, but I figured I might need some basic beeps for debugging later.
- Unplugged unnecessary peripherals.
- Carefully removing the case.
- Disconnected the Wi-Fi module.
- Removed the Bluetooth module.
- Even detached some of the internal connectors I figured were non-essential.
The Boot-Up (Fingers Crossed)
With everything stripped down, it was time to power it on. I held my breath… and… it beeped! Success! Well, sort of. It booted, but obviously, without Wi-Fi, I couldn’t do much.
I spent a good hour just poking around in the terminal, seeing what basic commands still worked. It was surprisingly… peaceful. No notifications, no distractions, just me and the command line.
The Aftermath (and What I Learned)
So, what did I achieve? Honestly, not a whole lot in terms of practical use. But it was a cool experiment! It showed me how much we rely on all those extra features, and how much we can actually do without. It’s like going camping – you realize you don’t need all that stuff to have a good time (or in this case, to have a functioning, albeit very limited, computer).
Would I recommend it? Maybe, if you’re into this kind of thing. It’s a fun way to learn about the guts of your computer and appreciate the simplicity of the core system. Just don’t expect to do any online shopping afterward!

It also force myself to be focus and patient.
