Okay, so today I decided to get into a whistling competition. Sounds kinda random, right? But I saw this thing online about a local competition and thought, “Why not?” I mean, I can whistle, I used to do it all the time as a kid. Figured it would be a fun way to spend a Saturday.
Getting Started
First thing I did was, well, practice. I haven’t really whistled seriously in years. So, I started with some basic tunes, like “Happy Birthday” and some simple scales. My lips felt kinda weird at first, like they’d forgotten what to do. I spent a good hour just blowing air and trying to get a clear sound. It was tougher than I remembered!
Warm-up Routine (if you can call it that):

- Tried different lip positions.
- Blowed air softly, then harder.
- Humidified my lips.
- Did basic tunes.
The Competition
Then came the actual competition. It was held in a small park, and there were maybe 20 of us. Some people looked super serious, like they’d been training for this their whole lives. Others, like me, seemed more like they were there for a laugh.
We had to do two rounds. The first was a “technical” round, where we had to whistle a specific song. They chose some classical piece I’d never heard of. I kinda fumbled my way through that one. The second round was “freestyle,” where we could whistle whatever we wanted. I chose a pop song I knew well, and I think I did a pretty good job on that one. I even threw in some fancy trills I’d been practicing.
The Results (or Lack Thereof)
Honestly, I didn’t win. Not even close. There was this one guy who could whistle with two fingers, and he made all these crazy bird sounds. It was insane! But, you know what? It was still a blast. I met some interesting people, had a good time, and rediscovered a skill I’d forgotten I had. I used to be so good as a kid, and today I just do it for fun.
Might even keep practicing. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll actually stand a chance. Or maybe I’ll just keep whistling to annoy my neighbors. Either way, it’s a win-win!
