Okay, so today I was messing around with the Watkins Glen track, specifically focusing on that tricky chicane right before the Esses. Let me tell you, it’s a doozy!
Getting Started
First, I hopped into my usual simulator setup. You know, the racing wheel, pedals, the whole nine yards. I loaded up Watkins Glen, picked my favorite car (a trusty GT3), and headed out for some practice laps.
Initial Attempts – A Mess!
- First few tries? Forget about it. I went in way too hot, locked up the brakes, and either plowed straight into the barrier or spun out like a top.
- Then I tried being too cautious, braking super early and basically crawling through the chicane. My lap times were, shall we say, not impressive.
Figuring it Out
After a few (okay, maybe a lot) of crashes and slow laps, I started to get a feel for it. I realized the key was to find that sweet spot with braking.

- I experimented with braking points, starting further back and gradually moving them closer to the turn.
- I focused on being smooth with the steering wheel. No jerky movements!
- I paid attention to trail braking, easing off the brakes as I turned into the chicane.
The “Aha!” Moment
Finally, it clicked. I found a braking point that felt right, nailed the smooth steering input, and carried good speed through the chicane. I even managed to set a personal best lap time! It was a great feeling.
Final Thoughts
That Watkins Glen chicane is a tough one, but super satisfying to get right. It’s all about practice, patience, and finding that perfect balance between braking and steering. I still have a lot to improve, but today was definitely a step in the right direction. Now, Time to tackle the Esses!
