Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my golf grip lately, trying to see if I can get some extra oomph in my swing. And you know what name keeps popping up when you talk about golf? Tiger Woods. So, I figured, why not see how the big guy does it?
I started digging around, reading some articles, and watching videos. It seems like everyone’s got an opinion on Tiger’s grip. Some say it’s “neutral,” others talk about a “strong” grip he used to have. It’s all a bit confusing, to be honest.
First, I tried to copy what I saw in the pictures. You know, just getting the general hand placement right. It felt weird at first, not gonna lie. My usual grip is probably what you’d call “weak,” so this felt different, I tried to keep it loose, like they say, but still firm enough to control the club.

Trying It Out
- Hitting balls: I went to the driving range a few times this week, just trying to get used to this new grip. I started with some easy swings, just focusing on making contact.
- Mixing it up: Then I started to experiment a bit. I tried to hit the ball with different clubs, different swings, the whole nine yards.
- Paying attention: What I noticed was that with this “Tiger” grip, I could really feel the club head more. It’s like I had more control over where it was going.
Now, I’m no pro, and I’m definitely not saying I swing like Tiger Woods now. But I did notice something interesting. When I really focused on keeping my hands in that neutral position, and tried to rotate my body like those videos showed, I could feel more power in my swing. It wasn’t always pretty, mind you. I sliced a few, hooked a few, the usual. But every now and then, I’d hit one that just felt… right. Like, the ball really jumped off the club face.
One thing I also picked up on was the type of grips he uses. Apparently, he’s into these Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord grips. I don’t have those on my clubs, but it got me thinking about how the texture of the grip might affect things. Maybe that’s something to look into later.
It seems like a stronger grip might be good for a bigger swing arc, and a more neutral grip could be better for higher swing speeds. I’m still trying to figure out what works best for me. My swing speed is probably nowhere near Tiger’s, so maybe that’s why I’m finding the neutral grip a bit more helpful.
Honestly, it’s a work in progress. I’m not going to pretend I’ve cracked the code or anything. But it’s been fun experimenting, and I think I’m actually learning something about my own swing in the process. I still have a long way to go, but hey, it’s all part of the game, right? It’s been a fun experiment, and I’ll definitely keep messing around with my grip to see what happens. Who knows, maybe I’ll stumble upon something that really clicks.
