Okay, so I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter online about Steve Stricker’s bag, his “WITB” – What’s In The Bag. I’m a bit of a golf gear nut myself, so I decided to dig in and see what the fuss was all about, and, more importantly, try to replicate some of his setup to see if it helped my game. (Spoiler: It did, kinda!)
First, I scoured the internet. I looked at a ton of forum posts, articles, anything I could find, to get a really solid understanding of what he was using. It’s not like he changes it up every week, so it wasn’t that hard to find consistent info.
My Experiment Begins
Next, I headed to my local golf shop. I wasn’t about to buy a whole new set, but I wanted to test out some similar clubs. Stricker’s known for his accuracy, especially with his irons and woods, so that’s where I focused.

- I tested out a few drivers with similar lofts and shafts to what I could gather he uses. It was all about feel, really. Could I get that same sense of control?
- I also tested some fairway wood similar to what he uses.
- The irons were trickier. I couldn’t find the exact model he uses (some of these guys play with seriously customized stuff!), but I tried to find something with a comparable head shape and weight.
- Then finally, I tried some similar putters that is similar to the one he uses.
After hitting a bunch of balls at the range with the demo clubs, I made some notes. Honestly, some of it felt great, and others didn’t. The fairway woods in particular felt good, and I noticed right away that my shots were a bit straighter, which is always a win.
I decided to make a few small changes to my own bag, based on my “Stricker experiment.” I swapped out my 3-wood for one that’s closer to what he plays, and it’s already making a difference. I’m hitting it more consistently, and that’s giving me more confidence on the course.
The whole point of this wasn’t to become Steve Stricker (I wish!), but to learn from his setup. It showed me that even small tweaks, inspired by the pros, can actually help us regular folks improve our game. It’s all about finding what works for you, and sometimes, looking at what works for the best can give you some good ideas.
