Okay, here’s my take on sharing my “houston astros beanie” project experience, blog-style:
Alright folks, so I finally finished that Houston Astros beanie I was talking about. Been wanting to make one for ages, especially since my little nephew is a HUGE fan. Figured I’d share the whole process, from start to finish, ’cause why not?
The Hunt Begins: Finding the Right Yarn

First things first, I needed yarn. Not just ANY yarn, but the right colors – navy, orange, and maybe a little white for the star. Hit up my local craft store, and spent like, an hour digging through all the bins. Ended up going with a nice, soft merino wool blend. Wanted something that wouldn’t be itchy, you know? Little kids are picky.
Pattern Panic (Slightly Exaggerated)
Okay, so I’m not a pattern person. I usually just wing it. But a beanie? That needs some structure. Scoured the internet for a decent pattern. Found a few free ones, but none of them were quite right. So, I Frankensteined a couple together. Took the ribbing from one, the crown shaping from another, and just hoped for the best.
Knitting, Knitting, and More Knitting
- Cast on the stitches (that was easy enough).
- Knitted the ribbing – about two inches worth. Nice and snug.
- Switched to the main color (navy) and started the body of the beanie.
- Here’s where things got a little tricky. Incorporating the orange stripes. I did a few rows of navy, then a row of orange, then back to navy. Had to keep track of my stitch count so the stripes would line up properly.
- The Star! Okay, this was the most challenging part. I ended up using duplicate stitch to embroider a white star onto the front. Took a couple of tries to get it looking decent, but I got there.
Shaping the Crown: The Home Stretch

Once I got to the top, it was time to start decreasing to shape the crown. Followed the pattern (mostly), and just kept knitting until it formed a nice, closed circle. Weaved in all the ends (the most annoying part, let’s be honest). And then… BOOM! Beanie achieved.
The Big Reveal (and a Tiny Bit of Pride)
I gotta say, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It actually looks like a Houston Astros beanie! And it fits my nephew perfectly. He was so stoked when I gave it to him. Totally worth all the effort.
So yeah, that’s my Houston Astros beanie story. Hope you enjoyed it! Maybe I’ll tackle a scarf next. We’ll see…
