Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “Sam Hartman Notre Dame jersey” thing pop up all over my feeds, and honestly, I was curious. I’m not a huge football fanatic, but the design looked pretty cool, and hey, I’m always up for a little DIY project. So, I decided to give it a shot, and make my own version.
The Hunt Begins
First things first, I needed a plain jersey. I didn’t want to spend a fortune, so I hit up a local sporting goods store. Nothing fancy, just a basic, green football jersey. The color wasn’t perfect, it’s more of a standard green, but for this project, it’ll work great. I made sure to get one that was a bit loose-fitting, I want this thing to be comfy.
Gathering Supplies
After securing the jersey, I had to get the rest of my materials. Here’s what I picked up:

- Gold fabric paint: Gotta get that Notre Dame gold in there!
- White fabric paint: For the numbers and any other details.
- Stencils: I’m not an artist, okay? Stencils are my best friends. I found some number stencils that looked about the right size.
- Paintbrushes: Various sizes, from thick for filling, and thin for details.
- Cardboard: Crucial for putting inside the jersey to prevent paint bleed-through.
- Masking tape: Helps with getting cleaner lines and sectioning off the areas to work.
Let’s get to work!
Now, here came the fun part. I found some photos of the jersey online so I had it clear in my head and could use it for reference. Then, I slid the cardboard inside the jersey, and started planning out where everything would go. Using the masking tape, I marked off the areas for the numbers and the name on the back.
It took some figuring out to get them centered and looking right. It took many tries.
Once I was happy with the placement, I grabbed the stencils and the gold paint. I started with the number on the back, carefully dabbing the paint onto the fabric. Multiple thin coats, that’s the key! I let each coat dry before doing the next one. It took forever, but it was worth it to avoid clumps and smudges.
The Finishing Touches
After the numbers were done, I did the same thing for the front. It was a bit tricky getting the smaller details right, but with a steady hand and a lot of patience, I managed. I used the white paint to add some accents and outlines, just to make everything pop a little more.

Finally, I peeled off the tape and admired my handiwork. It’s definitely not perfect, but hey, I made it myself! It’s got that homemade charm, you know? It’s a little rough around the edges, but that’s part of the appeal. Now I’ve got my own unique “Sam Hartman Notre Dame” inspired jersey, and I didn’t have to break the bank to get it. That’s a win in my book!
