Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with this thing called “RTD boxing.” I’d seen it pop up a few times on some boxing websites, like “boxrec” or something. It’s one of those weird abbreviations, and from what little I could gather, it had something to do with a fighter quitting on their stool between rounds.
So, I started digging around. First, I wanted to get the full form of this “RTD” thing. Turns out, it stands for “Referee Technical Decision.” Sounds kinda fancy, but what does it really mean in the world of boxing? I kept seeing this RTD thing on fighter records, and it seemed like it was basically when a boxer just decided they were done and didn’t come out for the next round.
I watched some old fights to see if I could spot an RTD in action. It’s kinda sad when it happens, you know? One guy’s just sitting there, and you can see he’s had enough. Then the ref waves it off, and that’s it. No big knockout or anything, just…done.

Here’s what I figured out after all this digging:
- RTD means the fighter retired in their corner.
- It’s different from a TKO, where the ref stops the fight because someone’s getting pummeled.
- It can happen for all sorts of reasons – maybe the fighter’s injured, exhausted, or just plain outmatched.
So, I went ahead and simulated some scenarios. I pretended to be a boxer (don’t laugh), and imagined different situations where I might just call it quits. I even set up a little corner in my room with a stool and a water bottle. Yeah, I know, it’s a bit much, but I wanted to really get into it.
My Little Simulation
First scenario: I imagined I was getting totally wrecked. Like, punch after punch, and I just couldn’t keep up. After a few “rounds” of shadow boxing, I slumped onto my stool and thought, “Yeah, I’m done.” That would be an RTD right there.
Second scenario: I pretended I took a hard shot to the ribs. I doubled over, clutching my side, and decided there was no way I could go another round. Another RTD.
It was a weird way to spend an afternoon, I guess. But now, I definitely get what RTD in boxing is all about. It’s not the most glamorous way for a fight to end, but it happens. And hey, at least I got a little workout in, pretending to be a boxer and all.
