Okay, so, I gotta tell you about this little project I did today. It all started this morning when I opened up the New York Times Mini Crossword. Usually, I just do these things for fun. Never really thought much of them, you know?
But today, there was this clue that caught my eye: “One of sixteen playing in the Sweet Sixteen.” At first, I was like, “What the heck does that even mean?” I stared at it for a good while, scratching my head.
Then, it hit me! We’re talking about basketball here, the NCAA tournament. I started jotting down some ideas, trying to think of anything related to basketball teams. I wrote down some players’ names, famous coaches, even some mascots, trying to fit the right letters into the puzzle.

- Tried “LAKERS” – nope, too long.
- Tried “DUKE” – nope, too short.
- Tried “CELTICS” – nah, still too long.
Man, this was tougher than I thought! I spent a solid ten minutes just staring at the puzzle, going back and forth between the clue and my list of words. I even googled “Sweet Sixteen teams” and started looking at the names of the teams that were in the tournament this year. Still nothing! I was getting a little frustrated, I gotta admit.
Finally, I decided to take a break. Maybe a fresh perspective would help. I went to get some coffee, and as I was pouring it, it suddenly came to me! The answer was right there in the clue – “One of sixteen playing in the Sweet Sixteen.” It’s a team! A single team is one of the sixteen playing! Duh!
The Final Solve
I rushed back to the puzzle and filled in “TEAM”. Boom! It fit perfectly. I felt like a genius, even though it was such a simple word. It’s funny how sometimes the most obvious answers are the hardest to see. That’s why I wrote it down, I don’t want to forget such a hard-won answer!
So yeah, that was my little adventure for today. Just a simple crossword clue, but it gave me a good little mental workout. And hey, it’s a reminder that sometimes the answer is right in front of you, you just gotta look at it the right way.
