Okay, so I wanted to try something new with my woodworking, and I saw this “coffin cut” thing online. I’m not even sure where I saw it, but I thought, “Why not?” So, I grabbed a piece of scrap wood from my pile – it was just some pine, nothing fancy.
First, I drew out the shape on the wood. It’s basically like a long hexagon, but one end is wider than the other, you know, like a coffin. I just eyeballed it, didn’t use any fancy tools or measurements. It’s not like it had to be perfect, it was just for practice.
Then, I clamped the wood to my workbench. I used my trusty jigsaw for this part. I started cutting along the lines I drew. The first few cuts were straight, so those were easy. But then came the angled cuts. I had to go slow and really pay attention to keep the blade on the line. I messed up a couple of times and had to adjust, but that’s part of learning, right?

- Drew the coffin shape on the wood.
- Clamped the wood to the workbench.
- Cut the shape out with a jigsaw.
After I cut out the whole shape, it looked a little rough. So, I grabbed some sandpaper and started smoothing out the edges. I started with a coarse grit to get rid of the bigger bumps and splinters, and then I switched to a finer grit to make it all nice and smooth. I wanted to make sure I would not hurt my hand when I touched it. It took some time, but I think it was worth it.
Once the edges were smooth, I decided to add a little bit of stain to it, just to give it some color. I had some dark walnut stain leftover from another project, so I used that. I just brushed it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wiped off the excess with a rag.
In the end, it turned out pretty good, I guess. I mean it is not perfect, but for a first try, I’m happy with it. It is just a simple project, but I learned a few things along the way, and that is what matters. Plus, now I have a cool-looking coffin-shaped piece of wood. Not sure what I’ll do with it, but it is kind of neat.
What I Have Learned
- Take my time when cutting angled lines.
- Sandpaper is my best friend.
- Staining can make a big difference.
Next time, maybe I will try to make a bigger one or use a different type of wood. Who knows, maybe I will even make a real coffin someday! Just kidding… unless?
So, that is my little adventure with the coffin cut. It was fun and I hope my sharing can help you. See ya next time!
