Alright, buckle up, because I’m about to spill the beans on my experience with the Mizuno Masters irons. This wasn’t some quick range session, this was a deep dive.
First things first, I got my hands on a set. Found ’em online, used but in decent shape. Immediately, I stripped them down. Grips off, shafts out – everything. Wanted to see what I was really working with.
Cleaning was next. These things were dirty! Soaked the heads in warm, soapy water. Scrubbed ’em with a toothbrush, got into all the nooks and crannies. Polished ’em up with some metal polish. Made a huge difference.

Then came the shaft prep. Cleaned out the hosels, made sure they were smooth and ready for new shafts. I went with some KBS Tour shafts, my go-to. Tipped ’em, prepped ’em with epoxy. Ready to go.
- Mixed the epoxy carefully.
- Applied it to the shafts and hosels.
- Inserted the shafts, making sure they were aligned properly.
Let the epoxy cure overnight. The next day, I trimmed the shafts to length. Checked the swing weight, made some adjustments with lead tape. Got them dialed in just right.
Grips! I used Golf Pride MCC grips, always a solid choice. Taped the shafts, solvent on the tape and inside the grips, slid them on. Let them set.
Finally, time for some range time. These Mizuno Masters irons are sweet! Feel is incredible. So soft, but still responsive. Workability is awesome, can hit any shot I want. A little less forgiving than some modern irons, but that’s the trade-off for that classic feel.
Overall Impression
Worth all the work? Absolutely. Taking these irons from beat-up to beautiful and perfectly fitted to my swing was super satisfying. Plus, they perform! If you’re looking for a classic iron with incredible feel, these are worth checking out. Just be prepared to put in some elbow grease.
