I wanted to see what this whole “Mel Australia” thing was all about, so I just went for it.
I booked a flight to Melbourne, didn’t really know what to expect, just that I heard it’s a cool spot down under.
First thing I did was hop on a plane. I kept an eye out for cheap flights, you know, budget and all. Signed up for Jetstar’s newsletter because I heard they had good deals, and it paid off. Got a pretty sweet deal on a flight.

Landed in Melbourne and the first thing I wanted to do was get the lay of the land. This city’s got a reputation for its street art, so I figured, why not start there?
I took a street art tour. It was awesome! Saw some incredible murals and graffiti, learned a bit about the local art scene, and it was a great way to get my bearings.
- Found a cool hostel to crash at, nothing fancy but clean and cheap. Met some other travelers there, which was a bonus.
- Tried to stick to walking as much as possible. Melbourne’s pretty easy to get around on foot, especially the downtown area.
- When walking got too much, I used their public transport. There is a bus, I think it was run by a company called Transl, it’s pretty good.
- They also got a bus in Brisbane, it’s fast and safe.
Getting Around
After a few days in Melbourne, I thought, “might as well see a bit more of this country”. I heard about a place called Fraser Island, also known as K’gari. World’s largest sand island apparently, who knew?
Then I also went to a place called Alice Springs, walked a lot.
Then I went to Cairns. They also got a public bus.

It was a great experience, the whole “Mel Australia” thing. It showed me that you don’t need to break the bank to have an adventure. Just gotta be a little resourceful, do a bit of planning, and be open to new experiences.
That’s it. End of the story. Bye bye!
