Okay, so my mate Dave’s birthday was rolling around again. Big rugby guy. Proper fanatic. Finding a gift for him is always a bit of a headache, honestly.
First thoughts, you know, the usual stuff. Went straight to jerseys. But then I thought, nah, he’s got loads. Plus getting the size right, it’s a gamble. And which team? He follows a few. Too complicated.
Then I considered maybe a rugby ball. The official kind. Seemed a bit plain, though. Like something you’d buy a kid just starting out. Dave’s been playing and watching since forever.

Digging a bit deeper
So I had to think harder. What does he really like about rugby? It’s not just the current games. He loves the history, the old legendary players, that sort of thing. He’s always going on about the Lions tours from back in the day or classic All Blacks moments.
Started searching online. Typed in things like “vintage rugby gifts” or “classic rugby memorabilia”. Saw some cool stuff, like old programmes or signed photos. But the signed stuff looked pricey, and honestly, hard to know if it’s real.
- Looked at old team photos.
- Considered books about rugby history.
- Even thought about stadium tours, but logistics are tricky.
Then I hit on something. Retro jerseys. Not the current season ones everyone wears. The old-school designs. The ones from the 70s or 80s. Simple, classic, you know?
That felt right. It showed I listened to him talk about the ‘good old days’ of the sport. It wasn’t just grabbing the first thing off the shelf in the club shop.
Finding the actual thing
So, new search: “retro All Blacks jersey replica”. Why All Blacks? He just respects them hugely, like most rugby fans do. Found a few places selling replicas of their older shirts. Compared a couple for quality, based on pictures and descriptions anyway.

Picked one that looked pretty decent. An older style, black with the white collar, simple silver fern. No sponsor logos plastered all over it like nowadays. Placed the order, crossed my fingers it would arrive on time and look okay.
It turned up, looked good. Wrapped it up. Gave it to him last weekend.
He absolutely loved it. Seriously, his face lit up. Said it reminded him of watching games with his old man. Way better reaction than just getting him another standard jersey or a gadget. So yeah, that worked out pretty well. Took a bit more effort than just grabbing something obvious, but worth it in the end.
