Okay, so I’ve been kicking around this idea for a while: why I think soccer (or football, as I call it) is just plain better than basketball. I played both growing up, so I figured I’d finally put my thoughts down.
My Experiment Setup
First, I decided to do more than just think about it. I wanted some real-world comparisons. So, I set up a few “tests,” if you can call them that. Nothing scientific, just some fun stuff to see what felt better, more engaging, and more exciting.
- Endurance Test: I tried playing a full 90-minute soccer match (with some breaks, I’m not a pro!) and then a basketball game with similar intensity (lots of running, obviously).
- Skill Challenge: I practiced juggling a soccer ball and doing some basic dribbling drills. Then, I switched to basketball, working on dribbling and shooting free throws.
- “Thrill Factor”: This was totally subjective. I watched highlights of amazing soccer goals and incredible basketball plays (dunks, three-pointers, the works).
- “Community Vibe”:I went to a soccer game. and went to a basketball game.
The Results (aka My Opinions)
Here’s what I found out, and remember, this is just my take:

Endurance-wise, soccer is a whole different beast. That constant running, even without always touching the ball, wore me out way more than the bursts of activity in basketball.
It made soccer more engaging.
Skill-wise, both sports need mad skills, no doubt. But for me, the footwork and ball control in soccer felt… trickier? More rewarding when I actually pulled something off. Basketball felt a bit more straightforward, at least the basics.
The “thrill factor” was the biggest thing. A last-minute goal in soccer? The eruption of the crowd, the feeling of pure, unadulterated joy? It’s unmatched. Basketball has its exciting moments, for sure, but that sustained tension and then release in soccer… * I feel that the soccer players are more team work.

The “community vibe” I felt was a very obvious contrast, the enthusiasm of the fans at the soccer game, the feeling of supporting the team, and the singing atmosphere made me feel more belonging. The atmosphere of the basketball game was relatively a little less.
So, yeah, that’s my little experiment. It confirmed what I’ve always felt: soccer just has that extra something. The flow, the global passion, the feeling of being part of something bigger… it’s just better, in my book. Don’t @ me, basketball fans! 😉
