My Thoughts on That Crazy Golf Shot
Alright, let’s talk about this “condor” thing in golf. Heard about it a while back. A hole-in-one on a par 5? Seriously? Sounds more like a myth, something cooked up after a few too many drinks at the 19th hole.
I’ve been playing golf for ages, not professionally, mind you, just hacking it around with buddies on the weekends mostly. We aim for pars, maybe a birdie if the stars align. An eagle? Yeah, that gets the blood pumping, feels like winning the lottery sometimes. But a condor… four under par on one hole… never seen it. Never met anyone who’s seen it.
Trying for the Impossible?

It got me thinking though. Back when I was younger, full of more beans than sense, I remember trying some really stupid shots on the course. Trying to cut corners over trees that were way too tall, aiming for greens from impossible distances. You know, the kind of hero shot that works maybe once in a lifetime, but usually ends up with you losing a ball or digging a new crater in the fairway.
There was this one par 5, dogleg left, massive trees blocking the direct route. My friends always played it safe, hitting an iron down the middle, then another layup, then onto the green. Sensible. Me? A few times, I pulled out the driver. Stared at the tiny gap in the trees. Thought, “What if…?”
- First time: Ball hit a branch, shot straight right into the woods. Lost ball.
- Second time: Actually got through the gap! Landed way down… in the thickest rough imaginable. Took two hacks to get out. Bogey.
- Third time: Smoked it. Perfect trajectory. Sailed over everything… and straight into the pond guarding the green on the other side. Double bogey.
After that third time, I kind of gave up on that particular shortcut. It just wasn’t worth the lost balls and the extra strokes. Sometimes, the direct path, the impossible shot, just isn’t the way to go. It’s fun to dream, fun to try maybe once, but most times, just playing steady golf gets you there faster and with less frustration.
Life’s Little “Condors”
Thinking about it now, it reminds me of other things. Not just golf. Like that time I tried starting that little side business selling handcrafted widgets online. Poured everything into it for six months. Felt like I was aiming for a condor, trying to hit it big right out of the gate. Ended up spending more than I made, lesson learned the hard way. Sometimes you just gotta hit the fairway, layup, and chip it close. Slow and steady often wins the race, or at least saves you a lot of lost golf balls, if you know what I mean.
So yeah, the condor. Amazing if it ever happens. But I’m not holding my breath trying to hit one. I’ll stick to aiming for the fairway and hoping for the occasional birdie. Much less stressful.
