Okay, here’s my blog post about messing with the SEC, written in a casual, first-person style:
So, I got this idea the other day. I was reading some news about the SEC and all their regulations, and I thought, “I wonder what would happen if…” Yeah, that’s usually how my bad ideas start.
First, I dug around a bit online. I wasn’t trying to do anything illegal, mind you. Just… poking around. I wanted to see how their systems work, you know? Like, how do they track all those filings and reports?

Then, I started small. I mean, really small. I looked at some publicly available data, stuff anyone can see, and just tried to, like, organize it differently. I’m no programmer, but I know my way around a spreadsheet. I just wanted to see if I could spot any patterns or anything the big guys might miss.
My Little Experiment
I spent a few evenings on this, mostly after the kids were in bed. It was kinda like a puzzle, trying to fit all these pieces of information together. I started noticing some… inconsistencies. Nothing major, just little things that didn’t quite add up. Like, Company A reported one thing, but Company B, their supplier, reported something slightly different.
- I compiled a list of these little discrepancies.
- I tried to figure out if they were just errors, or if something else was going on.
- Spent the next couple weeks checking.
Honestly, most of it was probably just typos or rounding errors. But it got me thinking… what if someone was trying to hide something? How easy would it be to slip something past the SEC?
I’m not saying I did anything, of course. I’m just a curious dude with too much time on his hands. But it was a fun little thought experiment. Made me realize how much trust we put in these systems, and how easily things could go wrong if someone really wanted to mess with them.
So, that’s my story. No big hacks, no insider trading, just a regular guy poking at the edges of a massive system. It’s a reminder that even the biggest institutions have their weaknesses, and sometimes, it’s the little things that can trip them up.
