Today I wanna talk about making a game called “Hat World.” It’s, like, this whole thing where you run around with different hats, and each hat does something cool. I got this idea stuck in my head, and I just had to try and make it happen.
So, first things first, I needed to get a game engine. I went with Unity because it seemed pretty popular and there’s a bunch of tutorials online. I downloaded it and started poking around. It was kinda overwhelming at first, with all these buttons and menus. But I found some beginner guides on YouTube and started to get the hang of it.
Getting the Basics Down
I started small, just trying to get a character moving around. I made this little dude in Blender, which is, like, this free 3D modeling software. It took me a while to figure out how to rig him up and all that, but eventually, I had this little guy who could walk and jump.

Then came the hats. I modeled a few basic ones – a top hat, a baseball cap, you know, the usual. I figured out how to make them stick to the character’s head, which was kinda tricky. Unity’s got this physics thing, and you gotta make sure the hats don’t just fall through the character’s head.
Making Hats Do Stuff
The real fun began when I started giving the hats powers. I wanted the top hat to make the character jump super high, so I messed around with the jump code and, bam, with the top hat on, he was leaping like crazy!
- Top Hat: Super jump.
- Baseball Cap: Made the character run super fast. I just tweaked the movement speed in the code.
- Wizard Hat: I wanted this one to shoot fireballs. I found a particle system in Unity and fiddled with it until I had these cool-looking fireballs shooting out.
It was a lot of trial and error. I’d write some code, test it out, and if it didn’t work, I’d go back and try something different. Sometimes it was frustrating, but then I’d finally figure it out, and it felt awesome.
Building the World
Next, I had to make a world for the character to run around in. I started with just a flat plane, but then I started adding hills and platforms. I found some free textures online – you know, like grass and dirt – and used them to make the world look a bit more interesting.
I made some obstacles, like gaps to jump over and walls to run around. It was kind of like building a little virtual playground. I kept playtesting it, running around as the character, making sure everything felt right.

Adding More Hats
I kept adding more hats, each with its own unique ability. I made a helmet that protected the character from damage, a propeller hat that let him fly for a short time, and even a chef’s hat that let him throw cooking utensils as projectiles.
It was a lot of work, but it was also a ton of fun. I was learning so much, and I was actually making a game! It wasn’t perfect, of course. There were bugs, and sometimes things didn’t work the way I wanted. But I kept at it, fixing problems as I went along.
And you know what? After all that work, I actually had a playable game. It wasn’t going to win any awards, but it was mine. I made it from scratch, and that felt pretty darn good. It’s still a work in progress, and I keep adding new things to it. But yeah, that’s the story of how I started making “Hat World.” It’s been a wild ride, and I’m still learning new stuff every day. It’s a lot easier than I thought to be honest.
