Okay, so I’ve been meaning to put together a list of the greatest Mexican boxers, and today I finally got around to it. It’s a tough one, because there are so many legends, you know?
First, I started by brainstorming all the names that popped into my head. You got your obvious ones like Julio César Chávez, Salvador Sánchez, and Marco Antonio Barrera. I jotted those down, but then I started thinking about some of the older guys, the ones my grandpa used to talk about. Guys like Kid Azteca and Rubén Olivares.
Then, to make sure I wasn’t missing anyone major, I did a quick search online, just to see what other lists looked like. It’s funny how everyone has different opinions, but there’s definitely a core group that everyone agrees on.

I spent a good hour going back and forth, adding names, removing some, and basically just trying to create an order I thought was a reasonable, base on what I knew and what I discovered.
My (Very)Rough Draft:
- Julio César Chávez
- Salvador Sánchez
- Rubén Olivares
- Marco Antonio Barrera
- Erik Morales
- Juan Manuel Márquez
- Carlos Zárate
- Kid Azteca
- Ricardo López
- Canelo Álvarez (Yeah, I know, some people debate this one)
After several times,I arranged them in this * I’m still not 100% satisfied, so I’ll probably keep tweaking it. It’s so hard to compare fighters from different eras! Different rules, different competition, you name it. But, hey, it’s a fun debate to have, right?
Any way,I finally accomplished it.
