Okay, so I recently tried out this thing called a “golf scramble format” with my buddies, and let me tell you, it was a blast! I’m not the best golfer, more of a “happy to be here” kind of player, but this format made it way more fun and less pressure.
So, here’s how it went down. We started by dividing ourselves into teams of four. The first step was everyone teeing off, like usual. After everyone hit their first shots, we had to pick the best one. We looked at all the shots, judged them on distance and accuracy, and pointed to the chosen one.
And here’s where the “scramble” part kicks in: The second step everyone else picks up their balls and moves them to where that best shot landed. It’s like a team do-over! We all got to play from the same, hopefully awesome, spot.

Then, the third step, we repeated the process. Everyone hits from that new spot, we picked the best of those shots, and moved all the balls again. We kept doing this, shot after shot, until we finally got the ball in the hole.
- Tee off, all players.
- Pick the best drive.
- Everyone hits from that spot.
- Pick the best of those shots.
- Repeat until the ball is holed.
The final step: We recorded the number of “team shots” it took to get the ball in. And we celebrated with a cup of water.
Honestly, it was awesome. Even when I shanked one into the woods, it didn’t matter so much because someone else on my team probably hit a decent shot. It took the pressure off and let me enjoy the game more. Plus, it sped things up, which is always a bonus.
We played a full 18 holes using this format, and by the end, we were all laughing and having a great time. It definitely made for a more social and relaxed round of golf. If you’re looking for a way to mix things up and have some fun on the course, I highly recommend giving the scramble format a try!
