Alright, so I wanted to make a “modern-day ref for faction” thing, you know, for a game I’m tinkering with. I wasn’t sure where to start, but I figured, why not just dive in and see what sticks?
Getting Started
First off, I started brainstorming. Just writing down whatever came to mind about what makes a faction feel real, you know? I didn’t want them to be just cardboard cutouts. I wanted them to feel like they could actually exist, with their own little quirks and stuff. So I jotted down some basic ideas, names, and what kind of vibe I wanted each faction to give off.
Building Them Up
Then came the fun part – fleshing these guys out. I started with their names, ’cause a good name can really set the tone. I played around with a few ideas until I found ones that felt right. After that, I moved on to their backstories. I mean, everybody’s got a past, right? Where did these factions come from? What are they all about? What do they want? I scribbled down some notes, nothing too fancy, just enough to give them some history and motivation.

Making Them Unique
Next up, I wanted to make sure each faction stood out. I started thinking about what makes them different from each other. Maybe one’s all about honor and tradition, while another’s more cutthroat and all about that power. I gave each of them some unique traits, beliefs, and ways of doing things. Nothing too complicated, just enough to make them feel distinct from one another.
Figuring Out the Rules
Now, this was a bit tricky. I had to figure out how these factions would actually work in the game. What are their strengths and weaknesses? I messed around with some ideas, trying to balance them out so one wouldn’t be totally overpowered, you know? I wrote down some rough rules for each, keeping it simple so I wouldn’t get bogged down in details. I didn’t write a rulebook, just some basic guidelines.
Putting It All Together
Once I had all the pieces, I started putting it all together. I organized my notes, making sure everything made sense. I tweaked a few things here and there, making changes as I went along. It was kind of messy, but it was mine, you know? I kept going over it, refining and polishing until I was happy with what I had. The references are not the rules but just a feeling about the faction and what I want it to be.
Testing It Out
Finally, I took it for a spin. I tried out the factions in the game, seeing how they felt to play. I even got some friends involved to get their feedback. It was rough around the edges, but it was a start. I made some more changes based on how it played, trying to make it as fun and balanced as possible. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out. I just wanted to make something fun, and I think I’m on the right track.
So yeah, that’s my little adventure in making “modern-day ref for faction.” It was a lot of trial and error, but it was a blast. I learned a ton along the way, and I can’t wait to keep working on it and see where it goes. Hope this gives you a general idea about how I made it. And let me know if you have similar experiences. I am always open to sharing and exchanging thoughts and ideas.
