So, I got out on the court today. Had that Dimitrov versus Shang match rattling around in my head from the other night. You watch those guys play, and it just makes you want to grab your racket, you know?
My main goal was to work on being a bit more aggressive from the baseline, kinda like Dimitrov tries to be. Stepping in more. First hour was just feeding myself balls, trying to hit my forehand flatter and earlier. Felt really awkward at first. Timing was all off. Sent quite a few sailing long or into the bottom of the net. It’s funny how easy Dimitrov makes taking the ball on the rise look.
Trying the Backhand Slice
Then I thought about Dimitrov’s backhand slice, how he uses it to change the pace and mess with opponents. Spent maybe thirty minutes just working on that. Trying to get low, keep the racket face open, get that nice skid on the ball. It’s a tougher shot than people think. Mine were floating a bit too much. Didn’t have that bite his has. Definitely need more practice to keep it low and penetrating.

Thinking About Shang’s Movement
After wearing myself out trying to emulate Dimitrov’s power and finesse, I started thinking about Shang. Specifically, his footwork and how he defends. He gets to so many balls. So, I did some basic movement drills. Side to side, moving up for short balls. Just trying to feel lighter on my feet. Man, was I gassed after that. It really hits home how incredible the conditioning of these pros is. They make covering the court look effortless, but trying even a fraction of it reminds you it’s anything but.
I didn’t really try to copy Shang’s shots directly, more his intensity in movement. It’s a different kind of challenge than hitting a specific shot.
Finished up just hitting some serves. Nothing fancy, just trying to get a decent rhythm and placement. Called it a day after about two hours. Felt good to sweat and work on things, even if I wasn’t hitting like a pro. It’s always a humbling experience trying to copy what those guys do. You realize the insane amount of work and talent involved. But hey, chipping away at it is part of the fun, right? Need to work on that slice consistency next time.
