Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “John Havlicek vs. Michael Jordan” debate popping up online a lot lately, and I figured, why not dive in and see what the fuss is all about? I mean, I’m a huge basketball fan, but more of the modern era. Havlicek is way before my time, so I felt like I was missing out.
First thing I did was hit up some online forums and articles. Gotta get some background info, right? I started digging into their stats. You know, points per game, rebounds, assists, all that good stuff. It became apparent that comparing stats directly is, to be a little bit complicated.
I quickly learned that the game was so different back in Havlicek’s day. The pace was faster, there was no three-point line for a good chunk of his career, and the rules were different. So, just looking at raw numbers wouldn’t really tell the whole story.

Diving into Old Footage
Next, I decided to watch some actual game footage. Let me tell you, it took a while to locate some good stuff! There were some grainy, black and white clips, but it was cool to watch Havlicek in action. The dude was relentless! He never stopped moving, always cutting, driving to the basket, and playing tough defense.
Watching Jordan was easier, of course. There are tons of highlights and full games available. It was easy to be reminded of his incredible athleticism, scoring ability, and that killer instinct.
- Havlicek: Non-stop hustle, incredible endurance, a real team player.
- Jordan: Explosive, dominant scorer, unmatched competitive fire.
After watching some of those videos, it hit me: these guys played in such different eras, it’s almost like comparing apples and oranges. Both were amazing, dominant players, but in their own unique ways.
I spent hours, down the rabbit hole, I am going to be honest. My conclusion? I don’t think there’s a clear-cut “winner.” It’s more about appreciating what each player brought to the game and how they dominated their respective eras. The debate is fun, but in the end, it’s all subjective. What do you guys think? Let me know what your thoughts are!
