Okay, so I wanted to make a “Black Hawk Newspaper,” and I had no clue where to start. I mean, I’ve read newspapers, but making one? Totally different ballgame.
First, I brainstormed. What did I even want to put in this thing? News, obviously. But what kind of news? Local stuff? Made-up stories? I decided to mix it up – some real events happening around my town, and a couple of silly, fictional pieces just for fun.
Gathering the “News”
This was surprisingly harder than I thought. For the real news, I walked around, talked to people at the coffee shop, and checked the local community board. I found out about a new park opening and a bake sale for the school. Score!

- New park opening – Saturday at 10 AM
- Bake sale – Friday after school
For the made-up stuff, I just let my imagination run wild. I wrote about a squirrel who stole someone’s hat and a cat that became mayor. You know, the important things.
Putting it Together
Next, I needed to actually, you know, make the newspaper. I didn’t have any fancy software, so I just used a regular word processor. I created different sections, like “Local News” and “Just for Laughs.”
I typed everything up, trying to make it sound like a real newspaper. Short sentences, to the point. I even added some silly headlines like “Squirrel Bandit Strikes Again!” and “Cat Elected Mayor in Landslide Victory!” (The cat part was definitely my favorite).
I played around with the layout, moving things around until it looked somewhat presentable. It wasn’t perfect, but it was starting to resemble a newspaper, sort of.
The Final Touch
To make it look even more “official,” I printed it out on some off-white paper I found in the back of a drawer. It gave it that old-timey feel, which I thought was pretty cool.

And there it was, my very own “Black Hawk Newspaper.” It wasn’t going to win any awards, but I made it, and that’s what counts. It was actually a lot of fun, seeing it all come together. Might even make another edition next week!
