Okay, here’s my blog post about finding the best steel tip darts, written from my personal experience:
Alright, so I’ve been getting really into darts lately. Like, REALLY into it. It started as a casual thing at the pub, but then I got my own board at home, and things just escalated. I quickly realized that the cheap, plastic-tipped darts that came with the board were, well, garbage. They wobbled all over the place, bounced out constantly, and were just frustrating. So, I decided it was time to level up to steel tip darts.
The Deep Dive (aka, My Weekend Project)
I started by watching countless videos, reading articles. I knew I wanted steel tip, that was a given, but after that? Total confusion. There are so many weights, barrel shapes, grip types… it was overwhelming!

My first move was to head to a local sports store. I figured I’d try holding a few different darts, see what felt good in my hand. I grabbed a handful, different weights, different grips. Some felt way too heavy, others too light. Some had these crazy knurled grips that felt like they’d rip my fingers off, others were so smooth they felt like they’d slip right out.
Trial and Error (and Lots of Throws)
I ended up buying three sets, all different:
- Set 1: A heavier set (around 26 grams) with a ringed grip. I thought the weight would give me more control.
- Set 2: A lighter set (around 22 grams) with a smooth, torpedo-shaped barrel. I figured maybe lighter was better for my throwing style.
- Set 3: A mid-weight set (around 24 grams) with a knurled grip. This was my “wild card” – I just wanted to try something totally different.
Back home, the real testing began. I spent hours throwing each set, making notes on how they felt, how they flew, and how consistently I could hit my target. I even made a little spreadsheet! (Yeah, I know, I’m a nerd.)
The heavy set? Nope. Felt like I was throwing bricks. The light set? Too flighty, I couldn’t get a consistent release. But that mid-weight set, the one with the knurled grip? Bingo!
My “Aha!” Moment
The knurled grip gave me just the right amount of purchase without feeling too aggressive. The 24-gram weight felt balanced in my hand, and I could get a nice, smooth release. My throws were suddenly tighter, more consistent, and I was hitting the doubles and triples way more often. It was like night and day!

My Takeaway (and Advice)
My big lesson here is that there’s no one “best” steel tip dart. It’s all about finding what works best for you. Your throwing style, your hand size, your grip preference – it all plays a role.
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Try different weights, different grips, different barrel shapes. And most importantly, practice! The more you throw, the better you’ll get at understanding what works and what doesn’t. Go out, throw some, record down and get that experiment to find your best darts!
