Okay, so today I decided to dive into the world of NASCAR fantasy picks. I’ve dabbled in fantasy sports before, mostly football, but this was my first time trying my hand at racing. Here’s how it all went down.
Getting Started
First, I needed to find a platform. I’ve used a couple of the big-name fantasy sites for football, so I checked if they had NASCAR. Found one! I signed up which was the usual stuff: email, password, and username.
Research, Research, Research
Once I was in, I quickly realized I couldn’t just pick drivers I recognized. I needed some kind of strategy! So, I opened up a few more tabs and start digging. I looked at things like:

- Recent Performance: Who’s been hot lately? Top 5 finishes, top 10s, that sort of thing.
- Track History: Some drivers just seem to do better at certain tracks. I tried to find guys who historically performed well at whatever today’s race was.
- Practice/Qualifying: How did the drivers do in practice and qualifying? Did they look fast?
I wasn’t trying to become a NASCAR expert overnight. But the point of all this research was to make some educated guesses, at least. So, I grabbed some names, and jotted them down on a notepad. Just winging it wasn’t going to cut it.
Making My Picks
Armed with my notes, I went back to the fantasy site. The way this particular contest worked, I had to pick a certain number of drivers, and stay under a “salary cap.” Each driver was assigned a value, so I couldn’t just load up on all the favorites. I had to find some good value picks, guys who might outperform their price.
This is where the research really helped. I found a couple of drivers who weren’t huge names but had good track history and solid recent performance. I plugged them into my lineup, and then used the rest of my “salary” to grab a couple of the top guys.
Fingers Crossed!
With my lineup set, all that was left to do was wait for the race. I kept refreshing my fantasy app’s scoreboard, and checked in on the real race, too. Honestly, watching was way more fun having “skin in the game,” even if it was just a fantasy contest!
One of my value picks actually did pretty well! He finished higher than I expected, which gave me a nice points boost. One of my top guys had some trouble, though. The race can really throw curveballs. That’s part of what makes it exciting, I guess!

The Aftermath
So, I didn’t win, I mean, it was my first time, what did I expect? But I didn’t come in last, either! I learned a ton, and had fun doing it.
Next time, I’ll definitely refine my research process. I’ve already got a few ideas on other stats to look at, maybe driver ratings on different types of tracks. It’s a learning experience, that’s for sure. I’m already looking forward to the next race, and putting my new strategies to the test!
