Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this basketball stat tracking thing. It’s kinda fun, kinda a pain, but I’m getting the hang of it. I started simple, just trying to keep track of the basics for my own games. You know, who scored, who got rebounds, that kind of thing. I tried just jotting it down on paper first, like during the game, but man, that was a mess. I’d miss half the action trying to write stuff down, and my notes looked like chicken scratch.
Then I thought, “There’s gotta be an app for this, right?” And yeah, there are a bunch. I tried a few, but some were too complicated, some wanted me to pay, and some were just, well, bad. Then I stumbled upon this idea of using cameras to track everything automatically. Apparently, that’s what the pros do. They have these fancy camera systems in the arenas that track every player and the ball like a hawk, 25 times every second.
No way I can afford that, but it got me thinking. I don’t need all that detail, not yet anyway. I went back to the apps and found one called “Easy Stats.” It’s more my speed. It is easy to record. The interface is simple. I can easily see every player’s stat. It mainly lets you focus on your team, which is cool. You can track the other team’s stats too, but it just lumps them all together as “Opponent.” Fine by me. I don’t really need to know which of their guys did what, just the overall damage they did.

I started out tracking just the shots. Was it a free throw, a layup, a 2-pointer, or a 3-pointer? Did it go in, miss, or get blocked? That’s the important part, right? Knowing your shooting percentage, whether it is good or bad. Also, for free throw, it is also a good indicator. The app gave me the shooting percentage in the boxscore. It tells me whether I played well or not.
- Tried tracking stats on paper – too messy and distracting.
- Found out about professional camera tracking systems – super cool but out of my league.
- Discovered the “Easy Stats” app – simple and focused on my team.
- Started with tracking just shots and scores.
I used the app for a few games, and it’s pretty neat. I learned that I shoot way more 3s than I thought, and I’m not as good at them as I’d like to be. I’m still figuring out the other stats, like assists, steals, and turnovers. There’s this thing called “plus/minus” too, which I’m still trying to wrap my head around.
Then I also searched some AI tools. I found this one called “SportsVisio.” It claims that it can track stats using AI. That sounds cool, but I haven’t tested it yet.
Next Steps
I might try out other apps eventually or even try to set up a basic camera system of my own someday. Who knows? Maybe I’ll become a stat-head. For now, though, I’m just trying to get better at tracking the basics and, more importantly, trying to make more of my shots! I’ll keep using “Easy Stats” for now and see where it takes me. It’s a good starting point, and it’s definitely making the games more interesting, even if I’m the only one who cares about the numbers!
