Alright, so lemme tell ya about this Denny Hamlin Xfinity Darlington thing I messed around with. It was a total spur-of-the-moment kinda deal, but hey, that’s how the best projects usually start, right?
First off, I was just chilling, browsing some racing forums, and saw people talkin’ about how tough it is to nail the right setup for Darlington, especially in the Xfinity series. Darlington’s a beast, man, that track will bite ya if you even think about gettin’ cocky. So, naturally, I figured I’d give it a shot myself.
The Setup:

- Started with a pretty generic Xfinity car template. Nothing fancy, just somethin’ to get me rollin’.
- Then, the fun began. I started tweaking the gear ratios. Darlington’s all about that balance between acceleration off the corners and top speed on the straights. Spent a good hour just messin’ with the numbers, tryin’ to find that sweet spot.
- Next up was the suspension. This is where it got tricky. Darlington’s got that crazy banking, so I had to stiffen up the right side of the car to keep it from rollin’ over too much in the corners. Left side, I kept it a bit softer to help with grip. It was a real balancing act.
- Tire pressures were next. I played around with different pressures on each tire, trying to maximize the contact patch and minimize wear. Ended up going a little higher on the right front to combat the heat from all that banking.
The Testing:
Hopped into the sim (iRacing, in this case), and started banging out laps. First few laps were rough, the car was all over the place. Made some adjustments to the dampers, tryin’ to smooth things out. Slowly but surely, it started to feel better.
The Problems:
Of course, things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows. The biggest problem I had was tire wear. After about 20 laps, the right front was completely shot. Had to come up with a way to save the tires without losin’ too much speed.
The Solution (Maybe):

Ended up makin’ a few more tweaks to the camber and toe, tryin’ to distribute the load a little more evenly across the tire. Also, I really focused on smoothin’ out my driving style, tryin’ not to overdrive the car into the corners. Seemed to help a little, but tire wear was still a factor.
The Result:
Did a simulated race run, and managed to finish without wrecking, which is a win in itself at Darlington. Pace wasn’t amazing, but it was consistent. Still needs work, but it was a good start.
What I Learned
- Darlington is a cruel mistress.
- Setup is everything. A small change can make a huge difference.
- Smooth driving is key to saving tires.
Overall, it was a fun little project. Definitely learned a thing or two about car setup and the challenges of racing at Darlington. Might give it another shot sometime, see if I can squeeze a little more speed out of it. Who knows, maybe I’ll even beat Denny Hamlin… Nah, just kidding (maybe).
