Okay, so today I decided to try making those “nitro balls” everyone’s been talking about. You know, the ones that look like little dragon’s breath snacks? I figured it would be a fun little experiment, and hey, worst case scenario, I’d have a good laugh, right?
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to gather my supplies. I already had most of the stuff, thankfully. Here is the list:
- Some colorful cereal balls, looks cute!
- A big container of liquid nitrogen (I have this thing…)
- A large, sturdy bowl… A metal one, cause safey first?
- Tongs – didn’t want to freeze my fingers off!
- Safety goggles, to protect my eyes from the splashes.
The Mixing Process
I put on my goggles and carefully poured some liquid nitrogen into the metal bowl. That stuff is COLD, you can see the vapor just rolling off it. Seriously impressive, it is kinda dangerous, so do not try at home, seriously.

Then, I gently added a handful of the cereal balls into the bowl. They immediately started to freeze, making this cool crackling sound. I used the tongs to gently stir them around, making sure they were all getting evenly coated in the liquid nitrogen.
I waited for few seconds, it felt like forever! I just wanted to see what happen, can’t wait to taste it!
The Result (and the Taste Test)
After about a 20 seconds, I used the tongs to scoop out a few of the frozen cereal balls. They looked like little frosted marbles, all covered in a layer of icy fog. Super cool!
Now for the moment of truth… the taste test. I blew on one of the balls to get rid of some of the excess nitrogen vapor (important!), and then popped it into my mouth.
It was…weird. Really, really cold, obviously, and kind of crunchy, but the flavor of the cereal was still there. And as I chewed, this little puff of “smoke” came out of my mouth and nose. It really did look like I was breathing dragon’s breath!

Final Thoughts
Overall, this was a pretty fun experiment. It’s definitely a novelty thing, though. I mean, you’re not going to sit down and eat a whole bowl of these things. I’m not sure how that could even be possible. But, as a little party trick or a fun science experiment, I definitely recommend the try. Just be careful with that liquid nitrogen, it is not something to mess around with.
