Okay, so I got into collecting Dale Earnhardt diecast cars a while back. It all started when I was a kid watching races with my dad. Earnhardt was always my favorite, the Intimidator, you know? So, naturally, I wanted a piece of that history.
I started small, just picking up a few cars here and there at flea markets and garage sales. I wasn’t too picky at first, just grabbing anything with the iconic black #3 on it. I quickly learned that there’s a HUGE world of these things out there!
The Hunt Begins
- First Steps: Flea markets, garage sales – basically anywhere I could find a bargain.
- Getting Serious: I started hitting up local hobby shops, you know, the ones with glass cases full of gleaming cars. The prices were higher, but the quality and selection were way better.
- Online: Boy did I open a Can of worms. There I found so many items and needed help.
I realized I needed to be more organized. So, I started researching the different manufacturers, like Action, Racing Champions, and Revell. I learned about the different scales (1:24 is the most common, but there are also 1:64 and others). I also discovered that some cars are way more valuable than others – limited editions, special paint schemes, cars with driver signatures… it’s a whole thing!

I began focusing on specific cars I really wanted. For example, I really wanted a replica of his 1998 Daytona 500 winning car. I spent weeks searching online. I found one, and man, it was worth it! It’s now one of the centerpieces of my collection.
My display evolved over time, too. At first, I just had them scattered around on shelves. Then, I built some simple wooden shelves specifically for the cars. I even added some LED strip lights to make them really pop. It is still a work in progress.
It’s not just about the cars themselves, though. It’s about the memories, the thrill of the hunt, and the connection to a racing legend. Each car tells a story, and I love sharing those stories with other fans.
