Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little project of making blue and gold cheerleader costumes!
It all started when my daughter’s cheer squad decided on a new color scheme. Blue and gold – classic, right? But finding the right costumes? Forget about it. Everything was either super expensive, looked cheap, or just wasn’t quite the right shade. So, what’s a crafty mom to do? DIY it, of course!
Gathering Supplies
First things first, I needed supplies. I’m no sewing expert, so I kept it simple. I hit up the local fabric store and grabbed:

- Lots of royal blue fabric – I went with a sturdy, but not too stiff, material. Something that could handle some jumping and twirling.
- Gold fabric for accents – I found some sparkly, shiny gold fabric that would really pop.
- Elastic – For the waistbands, of course. Gotta keep those skirts up!
- Thread – Blue and gold, naturally.
- Scissors, pins, and a sewing machine – Borrowed the sewing machine from my neighbor, bless her heart.
The Skirt Struggle
The skirts were the first hurdle. I measured my daughter and her teammates (with lots of giggling and “stand still!” moments). I cut out simple A-line shapes, making sure to leave enough room for movement. Sewing the side seams was pretty straightforward, even for a beginner like me. The elastic waistband was a bit trickier – getting it the right tension took some trial and error (and a few ripped seams, oops!).
Top It Off
For the tops, I decided on a simple tank top design. I used an old tank top of my daughter’s as a pattern – traced it onto the blue fabric, cut it out, and sewed it together. Easy peasy!
Adding the Sparkle
Now for the fun part – the gold! I cut out strips of the gold fabric and sewed them onto the skirts and tops. I did a simple stripe around the bottom of the skirts and added some diagonal stripes across the tops for a bit of extra flair. I even added some gold stars to the tops which I thought look really nice!
The Final Result
After many, many hours (and a few accidental needle pricks), the costumes were finally done! Seeing the girls’ faces when they first tried them on was totally worth it. They looked amazing – so bright and cheerful, and ready to cheer their hearts out!
And you know what? They held up great! Even after all the cheering and tumbling, those costumes still looked fantastic. Plus, I saved a ton of money by making them myself. Win-win!

So, if you’re ever in need of some custom costumes, don’t be afraid to give DIY a try. It’s a lot of work, but so rewarding. And who knows, you might just discover a hidden talent!
