Okay, so I’ve been messing around with different guitar picks lately, trying to find one that really clicks with my playing style. I play a lot of fast, alternate-picking stuff, and I’ve always struggled with getting a clean, consistent sound. I decided to give the “Jazz III” shape a shot, specifically the white, pointed ones.
First thing I did was grab a few different brands. I snagged some Dunlop ones, since they’re like, the standard, and then a couple of other random brands I found at the local music store. Honestly, I didn’t have high hopes – I’ve tried a million picks before, and nothing ever seemed to make a huge difference.
Experimenting with Grip
I started by just playing my usual warm-up exercises, some chromatic scales and arpeggios. Right away, I noticed the smaller size of the Jazz III felt…weird. I’m used to holding picks with more of my fingers, but this one forced me to use just the tips of my thumb and index finger. It felt awkward at first, like I was going to drop it any second.

I spent a good hour just fiddling with the grip, trying to find a position that felt secure but not tense. I watched a couple of YouTube videos of guys playing with Jazz IIIs, and copied their hand positions. It helped a bit, but it still felt foreign.
The Sound
Once I got somewhat comfortable with the grip, I started focusing on the sound. And, wow, that’s where the difference was! The pointed tip and the stiffness of the pick gave me this incredibly articulate attack. Every note was super clear, even when I was playing really fast. It was like a veil had been lifted from my guitar’s tone.
- Clarity: The notes were much clearer and more defined.
- Speed: I felt like I could play faster with more control.
- Consistency: My picking attack was more consistent across all strings.
The Verdict (So Far)
I’ve been using the white, pointed Jazz III picks for about a week now, and I’m pretty much sold. It took some getting used to, and I still feel like I’m refining my technique, but the improvement in my sound is undeniable. My fast runs are cleaner, my rhythm playing is tighter, and I just feel more connected to the guitar.
I’m still experimenting with different brands and materials within the Jazz III shape, but for now, the basic white, pointed ones are my go-to. It’s amazing how such a small piece of plastic can make such a big difference!
