Alright, so today I’m gonna walk you through this little thing I was messing around with: figuring out whether to root for the 76ers or the 49ers, based on some stuff I saw on the NYT. It’s not a huge deal, just a fun little project, but I figured I’d share the process.
First off, I saw a piece in the New York Times mentioning both the 76ers and the 49ers. Don’t remember exactly what it was about, some kinda general sports thing, I think. Anyway, it got me thinking, “Hey, I should really pick one of these teams to actively support.” I mean, I generally like sports, but I don’t really have a team, ya know?
So, step one was research. I started by hitting up the 76ers’ website. I wanted to get a feel for the team, the players, the whole vibe. I checked out their roster, glanced at some recent game highlights, and tried to get a sense of their overall standing in the NBA.

Next up, the 49ers. Same deal. Went to their site, poked around, looked at the players, recent games, their record, all that jazz. I even went down a bit of a rabbit hole watching some old Super Bowl highlights featuring them. Nostalgia’s a powerful thing, man.
Then I started making a little list. Pros and cons for each team, you know? For the 76ers, I was thinking, “Philly’s a cool city, basketball’s a fast-paced game, and they got some exciting young talent.” But then again, I don’t really follow basketball that closely, so I wouldn’t know much.
For the 49ers, I was like, “Football’s classic, the 49ers have a rich history, and I actually understand the basics of the game.” But then I remembered all the off-field drama that can plague football and I hesitated.
I spent the next couple of days just kinda mulling it over. Watching a few games from each team, reading some articles, and generally trying to absorb as much information as I could. I talked to a buddy who’s a big football fan and got his take on the 49ers. He gave me a whole rundown on their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, I just kinda went with my gut. There wasn’t a real scientific reason behind it, more of a feeling. The 49ers, with their history and slightly simpler-to-understand game (for me, anyway) seemed the better choice.

And that’s pretty much it. I decided to tentatively throw my support behind the 49ers. I’m not going crazy with it, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on their games and maybe even buy a team shirt if I get really into it.
So, lessons learned:
- Sometimes, you just gotta pick something and go with it. Overthinking it doesn’t really help.
- A little research goes a long way. Knowing something about the team you’re supporting makes it a lot more fun.
- It’s okay to change your mind. Maybe next year I’ll be a 76ers fan. Who knows?
All in all, a fun little exercise. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check the 49ers’ schedule. Gotta be ready for the next game!
