Today, I gonna talk about a little math problem I faced. 160 divided by 8. It seems easy, right? Let me walk you through my process.
Get Started
First off, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. Old school, I know. I wrote down “160 ÷ 8” to make it look more formal. It felt a little silly, but it helped me concentrate.
The Long Division
I started with the long division method. You know, the one we learned back in school. I placed 160 inside the division bracket and 8 outside. Then, I began the process.

- Step 1: I looked at the first digit, 1, and realized 8 couldn’t go into it.
- Step 2: I moved to the first two digits, 16. I thought, “How many times does 8 go into 16?” Bingo! It’s 2. So, I wrote 2 above the 6 in 160.
- Step 3: I multiplied 2 by 8, got 16, and wrote it below the 16 in 160.
- Step 4: I subtracted 16 from 16, got 0. Perfect.
- Step 5: I brought down the next digit, which is 0, beside the 0 I just got from the subtraction.
- Step 6: Now, I had to figure out how many times 8 goes into 0. Well, that’s 0. I wrote 0 next to the 2 above the division bracket.
- Step 7: I multiplied 0 by 8, which is 0, and wrote it under the 0.
- Step 8: I subtracted 0 from 0 and got 0 again. No remainder!
Double-Checking
After I finished the long division, I got 20 as the answer. But, you know me, I had to double-check. I multiplied 20 by 8 and, guess what? I got 160. I felt relieved and quite happy. It’s nice when things add up correctly.
Another Way
I also tried another method, just for fun. Instead of dividing 160 by 8 directly, I thought, “What if I just divide 16 by 8?” That’s 2. Then, I added the 0 from 160 to the end of 2, making it 20. It was a neat little shortcut.
Listing the Factors
Then, I got curious about the factors of 160. I listed them out: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20, 32, 40, 80. It was interesting to see how many numbers could divide 160 evenly.
Reflecting
I found out that 160 is divisible by 8, because 8 is one of its factors and leaves no remainder when divided. It made sense. There was also this even rule I read about. It said if the hundreds digit is even and the last two digits are divisible by 8, then the whole number is divisible by 8. 160 fits that rule.
So, that’s it. That’s how I tackled 160 divided by 8. It was a nice little mental exercise, and it’s always fun to revisit those old math lessons. I hope you enjoyed my little math journey today!
